Telephone socket

Are you going to connect the phone? How to do this? First you need to determine the type of outlet used:

  1. Several years ago, there was no particular choice and there was only one option - RTShK-4. Each home with a home telephone was equipped with this standard appliance.
  2. Today, European analogues RJ11 and RJ12 came to replace the Soviet classics. The first of the analogues is customary to use in apartments and residential buildings, and such a device is equipped with two wires. RJ12 connects directly to four wires and is used for branching in office premises to a large number of channels.

For home use, it is better to purchase the first type.

Important! Modern houses are usually equipped with a wide variety of appliances. And so that its use is safe, you need to select the appropriate sockets for each type of device. In separate articles we talked about:

Types of installation

With minimal knowledge, you can get it done in 10-15 minutes. Two connection methods are known - open and closed.

Open method

It is used for installation on the surface without removing the finishing layer. If the repair in your apartment is fully completed, then nothing will have to be disassembled:

  • In this way, the outlet is mounted directly on top of the wallpaper.
  • The cable itself with this installation is hidden under the baseboard. Also, this method allows you to place all the equipment directly on the floor.
  • The entire installation is fastened with four screws. Two for the connector, two for the cable.
  • After all, the fasteners can be laid insulation and fixed.
  • Then the cover of the device’s case just closes, and you can begin to operate.

Important! Do not take up work if you don’t wear latex gloves, otherwise you risk getting a significant electric shock.

Hidden method

This method of mounting a telephone wall jack requires laying a telephone wire before connecting the wall jack:

  • For this case, you need to plan its location in advance.
  • Wires are most often hidden in the walls, and the outlet itself is pulled out.
  • Outwardly, the whole method resembles the installation of the simplest electrical outlet.

Important! These methods have no fundamental differences, so you can use any.

Connecting an RJ11 telephone jack

Before starting all the manipulations, you need to carefully prepare:

  1. Find wires that have a cross section of about 0.5 mm and are equipped with two conductors.
  2. Take some sharp object to remove the insulation. A kitchen knife or sharp pliers are perfect.
  3. You will also need a flat and Phillips screwdriver.
  4. Find a good multimeter with a voltmeter for measuring voltage.
  5. Find rubber gloves for all work.

Modern communication devices have different dimensions and color schemes. To connect RJ11 yourself, you need to follow this instruction:

  • Wear rubber gloves on your hands. This precaution will save you from accidental electric shock.
  • Now remove the insulation long enough to connect.

Important! The winding must be removed very carefully so as not to damage the core itself.

  • Now connect the outlet itself to the power source. The wires in this device are attached to the contacts, which are located in the center. If you are experiencing difficulties, then find a schematic sketch in the space of the global network.
  • Then you need to pick up a multimeter or some other tester with a voltmeter. The measuring device is useful for determining the polarity of conductors. The minus of the wire should be indicated in red and the positive pole in green.
  • Next, you need to fix the wires without insulation between the plugs, which are located in the socket. The fasteners have a specific shape so that the wires hold well. Rewind the joints with electrical tape after fixing.
  • It remains to fix the device case. Some types of cases are equipped with automatic latches, but if none are available, then it is worth using screws.
  • Internal installation differs only in that first you will need to make a hole in the wall that will correspond to the size of the outlet. Then there is mounted the socket, and the cable is fixed in the same way.

Connecting a telephone jack is the simplest procedure, as you can see. But are there any other interesting nuances of installation?

Important! When installing a different type of outlet, use the ready-made instructions from the following articles:

  1. How to ground the sockets in the apartment?
  2. How to install sockets in concrete walls?

What else should you pay attention to?

As we have already said, RJ11 and RJ12 contain 2 and 4 pins respectively. They look like little metal forks. The cable itself is attached directly between the claws of the plugs. Each device is attached to only two contacts.

Important! Professionals can use a cross knife to fasten, but a kitchen knife is also suitable in everyday conditions. Why spend money on a special tool if the connection is made once or twice?

The insulation is cut somewhere by 4 cm, and the cores themselves should be at a distance from each other. Some users do not purchase European outlets, because they still have a whole bunch of components from the Soviet era. For this case, you should know these notations:

  • RTShK. Once it was the Soviet standard, but now you will not find such devices anywhere. But if you have spare parts lying around, then the phone will work fine using such technology. Such devices have 4 outputs and a short circuit key.
  • KSPV is a copper wire, consisting of only one core. The core itself is covered with insulation made of polyethylene material. Such a cable is most often available in standard white color. It is customary to use it for indoor installation in an apartment or residential building.
  • It remains the TRP, which is popularly called the "distribution cable". It is intended for standard telephone line routing. The wire itself is single-pair and has one copper core, which is also insulated with polyethylene.
