What is the TV screen resolution?

Display resolution is one of the most important criteria that guides customers when choosing a technique. This parameter affects the clarity of the image. If you imagine cross-stitch, where each cross has its own color, and from all kinds of crosses you get a complete picture, and the smaller the cross, the more they are on the canvas, the better picture. In other words, the more details, the sharper and better picture.

So it is with the monitor screen, only the dots, the so-called pixels, play the role of crosses, and the display itself plays the role of the canvas. The clarity of the picture, its color, and quality depend on how many dots fit vertically / horizontally on the screen. That is, whether the picture will be bright, beautiful, clear, or grainy, blurry - for this we need to understand what resolution of the TV screen is better.

Based on the above factors, it may seem that the more dots (pixels), the better - this is not entirely true. If the size of the real image is much smaller than the size of the display, then the quality will noticeably decrease and a decent picture can only be seen from afar. Ideally, the format of the material shown and the monitor should be the same. Therefore, we must choose which resolution of the TV screen is better, in combination with its size. Only in this way and nothing else.

Important! Resolution is determined by the number of pixels per inch. And the larger the diagonal of the screen, the greater should be the number of dots horizontally and vertically, otherwise - the picture on the screen will be blurry and grainy.

Screen Resolution Standards

Modern standards are divided into two main:

  • HD ready.
  • Full HD

The first is found in equipment with a small diagonal. Display format for such devices:

  • 1366x768 on the LCD.
  • 1024x768 in the plasma.

Important! Resolution is not the main thing that will affect your perception of the image. We have prepared special articles that will help you both in the selection of equipment and in its placement in your home:

  1. TV viewing angle.
  2. The distance from the TV, depending on the diagonal.
  3. What is the height of the TV?

The second format with parameters of 1920x1080 pixels is found in high-definition displays, with a diagonal of over 27 inches, designed to play video of the same quality.

In the description of the device, the screen resolution is indicated by the number of lines, for example, 720 p, 1080 p, 1080 i. In this case, the Latin letters determine the type of sweep:

  • “P” is progressive;
  • “I” is interlaced.

Important! In interlaced scanning, the image on the display is updated in two stages: each even and odd lines are updated after 30 seconds, and progressive scan updates the lines at the same time every 60 seconds. Sometimes the screen resolution is referred to as HD and Full HD.

Since 2012, models capable of operating in Ultra HD format have appeared on the home appliance market. This abbreviation has become one of the most noticeable trends of today. Proponents of the new picture quality claim that the superiority over Full HD is fourfold. Judge for yourself, Ultra HD has:

  • Resolution 3840x2160 or 7680x4320.
  • The color depth is 10/12 bit.
  • Color gamut of 75.8%.
  • Progressive scan, 50-100 frames per second.

The performance of the new standard is really impressive. And even the matter is not in the huge number of pixels in the television frame. This format implies a better signal. The video on screen will contain much more information about the color of the picture. But unfortunately, the main problem here is the lack of content on such parameters. That is, there are no movies, TV shows and videos created in 4K / UHD yet.

Important! Therefore, if you decide today to buy a TV with a similar format, then you should not spend money on it. By the time that sufficient volumes of video materials are created in UHD, the cost of models with such capabilities will be reduced.

What screen resolution is best for a TV?

Each format has its own advantages. But, to decide what screen resolution is best for the TV, it is necessary on what signal source you have. In particular:

  • HD-Ready screen - suitable for terrestrial, cable, satellite television. This format is well suited for watching DVD movies.
  • Full HD screens with the parameters of 1920x1080 - suitable for connecting game consoles for computer games, satellite TV channels and Blue-Ray disc players. It should be noted that a full HD home appliance can reproduce cable and terrestrial signals, but the image quality will be worse in this case.

Important! The traditional broadcast resolution is 720x576 pixels for PAL and SECAM, and for NTSC - 720x480. Therefore, the TV is trying to greatly stretch the picture and form the missing points from neighboring ones. As a result, the picture is distorted and very rough, proportions change.

Helpful hints:

  1. To find out the resolution of the monitor, read the instructions and find out all the technical specifications of the product. You can also consult with the seller, but the best option is to check the information on the website of the manufacturer of the equipment manufacturer.
  2. Please note that the displayed image resolution will always be equal to the lower of the display resolution of the TV or video signal. In particular, if you watch DVD on the screen of a Full HD TV, then the image will be displayed in DVD resolution, if you give a signal with a higher resolution than that of the TV, then you will see the image with the resolution of the TV, since it is smaller.

Important! Choosing a TV, each buyer is faced with the problem of choosing a manufacturer. We have prepared a review in which you will learn the best brands of TVs.

It should be noted that the number of horizontal and vertical dots alone does not determine image quality. Other characteristics of the device are of great importance, in particular: the features of the video processor, the characteristics and settings for the color gamut, contrast, screen size. Therefore, despite the characteristics recorded in the TV passport, be sure to check the image quality yourself and, first of all, on the content of the format that you will view most often. Good luck and high-quality viewing of your favorite movies and shows!
