Polishing glass paste GOI

The history of glass has more than 5.5 thousand years. Currently, it accompanies us everywhere - from the glass of our watches to the glass of our car. However, over time, the glass becomes scratched, cloudy. A universal tool for polishing and restoring the aesthetic appearance of such a material is GOI paste. It is used for processing not only glass, but also plastic, plastics, mirrors, even metals, including precious ones. How is the glass polished with GOI paste? We will deal with this in detail in this article.

What is GOI paste?

GOI is an abbreviation that stands for State Optical Institute, where in 30 years this paste was developed. It is available in the form of solid bars, mostly green. It is based on chromium oxide.

This tool was designed to restore damaged material, protect it from external influences, to improve reflective qualities. It allows you to polish a mirror or glass surface. The mass applied to scratched, damaged glass fills small chips, restores the integrity of the structure.

The main parameter by which the types of this agent are divided is the granularity. GOI paste is made in four variations, each of which has a number attached:

  • No. 1 and No. 2 - small crumbs, which allows you to polish smooth surfaces to maximum shine.
  • No. 3 is suitable for polishing steel, another metal.
  • No. 4 is the coarsest paste, suitable for removing scratches, removing noticeable scuffs.

GOI paste polishing

Before you start directly polishing the glass with GOI paste, you must do the following:

  1. The tool itself is quite solid, so before applying it to the fabric, you need to dilute it. To do this, you will need a few drops of engine oil, after applying which a liquid consistency is obtained.
  2. To maximize the effect, first clean the object from dust and dirt.
  3. Prepare the necessary tools. The harder and coarser the object, the rougher the tool should be. For processing glass, it is better to use a flannel rag. If this is engine glass, then it is better to take a felt disc.

How to polish glass with GOI paste?

  • Chip off a piece of solid and apply a few drops of engine oil on it. Mix the resulting mixture thoroughly and apply to a rag or polishing disc.

Important! Experts do not recommend applying the product to the polishing object itself - this can worsen the result.

  • Rub the surface for several minutes. Do not press very hard so as not to damage the glass.

Important! To polish glass on a watch or on mobile gadgets, paste No. 2 is suitable.

  • If the scratches are shallow and the task is only to add gloss to the surface, then you can cope with this task without any additional devices. And you can use a drill with a special nozzle or grinder to speed up the process. The nozzle is made of felt. It can be used without a drill, when working manually.

Important! Everything, of course, depends on the amount of work. Handling the car’s windshield manually will be problematic and will take too much time; you can’t do without a tool here. But polishing the glass on the watch is easy and manual.

  • In the process, it is necessary to monitor the heating of the glass, because if it overheats, it may burst.
  • The treated surface must be regularly wetted with water, otherwise we will get an unsatisfactory result. The result depends on the volume of liquid and the product itself.

Important! Too much water will wash away the polishing agent and the abrasive particles will not be able to touch the glass tightly. If the amount of water is too small, it will turn out not a mirror but a matte surface.

Grinding or polishing?

In some cases, when damage is more noticeable, polishing the glass is not enough. In these cases, grinding is carried out. Grinding is a rough method when leveling the surface with abrasive materials, while removing a certain layer. Sanding is used to clean deep scratches. To do this, use the most grainy paste No. 4.

Manually dealing with such a thing will no longer be easy. This is a longer process that requires accuracy and patience. After that, the surface looks dull. To smooth it after rough processing, polishing with a fine-grained abrasive is carried out. In this case, polishing is the next processing step after grinding and is carried out using fine-grained paste No. 1 or No. 2.
