Fiberglass painting without putty

Recently, a relatively new type of finishing coating for walls and ceilings - fiberglass - has become increasingly popular among masters. Building material is one of the best options for high-quality and durable interior decoration. Using a web, cracks on the surface of walls and ceilings can be avoided. However, this material is not a finish coating, it is, so to speak, the basis for further finishing work. After gluing the cobweb, many home masters are faced with the problem of choosing a paint and do not know if it is possible to paint fiberglass without putty. Today we will try to help understand the issue of whether it is possible to paint fiberglass without putty, we will tell you which paints are better to use for work.

Fiberglass Painting: Application

Do I need to putty or primer fiberglass before painting? Finishing material fiberglass is usually called a cobweb and is used in the reinforcement of surfaces before finishing work. The cobweb is a great helper in the fight against problems such as cracks on surfaces.

Important! The use of fiberglass virtually eliminates the possibility of cracks on the walls and ceiling after the full range of finishing works.

A spider web consists of fiberglass yarns, like glass wallpaper, but the difference is that fiberglass is not made on machines, but pressed by a method that resembles the process of making paper. As a result of such pressing, even, thin and smooth sheets with a fiberglass density of 25-50 g / sq.m appear.

Important! The material is smooth to the touch, although it can sometimes be pricked. Fiberglass is produced in 50-meter rolls. The strength of the cobweb is relatively small, so any careless behavior with the material can lead to damage.

Fiberglass differs from cullet not only in the manufacturing method, but also in the absence of a pattern and relief on the surface. This has its advantages, since the lack of relief on the surface of the fiberglass allows it to be painted an unlimited number of times.

pros

The indisputable advantages of modern finishing material include the following:

  • The spider line after proper gluing from a fragile and brittle sheet turns into a reinforcing mesh that can hide small defects in the surfaces of walls and ceilings.
  • The material is practically not afraid of mechanical damage, exposure to water, fire and aggressive substances.
  • Does not accumulate static type electricity on the surface. It does not attract dust.
  • The web contains only natural materials. Eco-friendly material does not release substances harmful to humans into the air.
  • It passes air perfectly.
  • The material is non-allergenic.
  • During operation, it passes water vapor well, thereby ensuring optimal humidity in the room.
  • Fiberglass prevents mold and mildew.

Important! One of the main advantages of using fiberglass is the possibility of applying paint to it almost immediately after gluing and drying. Since the cobweb has the same properties and features as the cullet, the same coatings can be used to finish it.

Fiberglass Paint

How to paint fiberglass? Experts recommend choosing water-dispersion paints, as they have the following advantages:

  • Absolutely harmless to the human body.
  • They are odorless, as they are based on water and polymers.
  • It can be used in any room.
  • Do not change the properties of the canvas.
  • Layers of paint lie evenly, regardless of their number.

Most often, the following types of water-dispersion paints are used for painting fiberglass:

  1. Acrylic Such paints are most popular because they have the following characteristics:
    • Dry quickly.
    • They are distinguished by excellent adhesion.
    • Not afraid of moisture.
    • Affordability in terms of price.
    • The ability to get almost any color.
  2. Latex. The operational properties of latex paints are higher than acrylic, but they are more expensive. Advantages of the material: moisture resistance, durability, increased wear resistance.

Important! Unlike acrylic coatings, latex can form a glossy surface.

  1. Silicone This type of paint is the most expensive. However, silicone paints include all the positive qualities of acrylic and latex compositions and have no drawbacks. In addition, this type of paint has dirt-repellent properties, which allows you to wash painted surfaces much less often.

How to paint fiberglass?

Since the positive quality of a spider web is its painting without preliminary and preparatory work, therefore, immediately after the canvas dries, you can start painting it.

Important! Of course, if you put paint on fiberglass without putty, you can save time on the drying of the material that aligns the walls. But in order to get a better finish as a result, it is recommended to use putty before painting the canvas.

Why putty?

Many professional builders give the following arguments in favor of using putty before painting the canvas:

  • Putty will eliminate all defects and make the surface more smooth and perfect.
  • The texture of the canvas is visible even under 1-2 layers of paint, which can ruin the appearance of the finish. Fiberglass pores are very difficult to paint over. Only a putty can fix a defect.
  • Fiberglass perfectly absorbs paint, so its consumption without putty will be huge. In addition, a lot of time will be spent on painting 2-5 layers.
  • In the event that you decide to replace the paint over time with wallpaper, it will be almost impossible to do this on the surface without putty.
  • When painting fiberglass, small fibers fall into the air, which is unsafe for the human respiratory system. Putty-treated surfaces are not only easier to paint, but also safer.

Surface preparation

To carry out preparatory measures and make the surface perfect, be sure to proceed as follows:

  1. After drying the canvases pasted on the wall, apply a primer.
  2. Allow the primer to dry. This usually takes 1 to 6 hours.
  3. Apply putty along each joint of the canvas in 2-3 layers. The layer thickness should be no more than 1 mm.
  4. To apply the last coat, use the finishing composition. Putty the entire surface of the wall (ceiling).
  5. Make sure that no cracks, bumps or cracks remain on the treated surface.
  6. Treat the surface with fine sandpaper or a silicon wire mesh for cleaning, eliminating the slightest flaws.
  7. Primer the surface to improve paint adhesion and reduce paint consumption.

Important! To make sure that the canvas is prepared for painting, point a flashlight at the treated surface, and a ray of light will reveal all the flaws.

If you decide to paint the canvas without prior puttying, then in order to reduce the paint consumption, prime it with glue.It will be much more profitable, since glue is cheaper than paint.

Painting fiberglass: step by step instructions

The process of painting the cobwebs is not particularly different from painting other materials. For work you will need the following tools:

  • Roller. It is better to use a roller with a filament-type pile.

Important! You can also use a paint brush for painting, but in this case, the process of painting a fiberglass will stretch for a long time.

  • Tray for paint.
  • Brush for painting hard-to-reach spots.
  • Oilcloth and masking tape.

After the base has been leveled and primed, proceed with painting:

  1. Cover the floor with oilcloth, and protect surfaces that will not be painted from dirt with masking tape.
  2. Thoroughly mix the ink to a uniform consistency. If desired, add a certain amount of color to the paint. To determine the proportions, pre-mix the components in a small container.
  3. Pour the prepared paint into the pallet.
  4. Dip a roller in the paint. Squeeze the tool on a special platform in the pallet from excess paint composition.
  5. Apply the paint evenly from top to bottom on the canvas.
  6. After the first coat has dried, apply a second coat of paint. The time between application of the subsequent layer should be at least 12 hours.
  7. Brush hard-to-reach spots.
  8. Wait for the paint to dry completely.

Important! When decorating the canvas, one often has to deal with painting metal communications, in particular, water and heating pipes. Use anticorrosion compounds such as Zinga conductive paint to finish these surfaces.
